1930 London, methodistischer Theologe und Schriftsteller. - Nach
der schulischen Ausbildung in Camborne, Zeist (Holland) und am Wesley
College in Sheffield studierte P. Medizin in London (St. Bartholomew's
Hospital), trat aber 1863 als Geistlicher in den Dienst der methodistischen
Kirche. Er wirkte u.a. in Leeds, Ipswich, Bedford, Westminster und
Bristol und war schließlich seit 1899 (in Verbindung mit der West
London Mission) für 14 Jahre als Missionar an der St. James Hall tätig.
- Sein Werk, das weite Verbreitung fand, umfaßt ebenso theologisch-exegetische
Abhandlungen wie auch Predigten, erbauliche Erzählungen und Lieder
und stellt insgesamt eine bedeutende Bereicherung des methodistischen
Schrifttums und vor allem des Liedguts dar.
