STURGE, Mary Darby, * 1862 in Stoney Lane bei Sparkbrook, † 14.3. 1925 in Selly Oak bei Birmingham. Ärztin, Quäkerin. - Mary Sturge wurde 1862 in Stoney Lane bei Sparkbrook nahe Birmingham (England) geboren, ihre Eltern waren Wilson und Sara (geb. Lloys) Sturge. Sie war die älteste von zehn Kindern. Als Klassenbeste beendete sie 1874 die Schule in Edgbaston (Birmingham), besuchte dann das Mason College (heute Birmingham University) und begann 1886 medizinische Studien an der London University. 1891 wurde sie Direktorin des Clapham Maternity Hospital. Schon im folgenden Jahr wechselte sie als "medical officer" an das North Eastern Fever Hospital. 1892 ließ sie sich als Allgemeinärztin in Birmingham nieder und wurde zur Ärztin auf Honorarbasis am Frauenkrankenhaus von Birmingham berufen. Neben ihrer medizinischen Arbeit betätigte sie sich in der Mäßigkeitsbewegung und schrieb 1904, zusammen mit Victor Horsley (1857-1916), "Alcohol and the Human Body", ein Ratgeber, der viele Auflagen erlebte. 1925 verstarb Sturge mit 63 Jahren in Selly Oak bei Birmingham.
