Forms of contemplation
The role of dream analysis in Eugen Fink's early work
AD FONTES
Studies in Early Phenomenology Volume 15

The present volume deals with the philosophical trauma argument with regard to the early phase of the phenomenology of Eugen Fink. In his dissertation Verwerwerstellung und Bild, published in 1930, and the Preisschrift, which is a draft of his dissertation, there is an implicit connection between two research horizons, namely a phenomenology of dreams and a phenomenology of hyperbolic doubt. While the comparability between the waking and dreaming states has long been controversial, Fink's analyzes of immersion as a borderline case of visualization bring to light the legitimacy of such a possible comparison. In addition, his original explanation of terms such as “madness”, “transfinite intention”, “nothing” and “overworld” contributes to a phenomenological foundation of the hyperbolic doubt. A joint consideration of these two research horizons, which were outlined in Fink's early work, will enrich our understanding of the transcendental instability of worldliness.
