EPHRAEM der Syrer (syrisch: Afrem), Kirchenschriftsteller und Hymnendichter, Diakon und theologischer Lehrer, Heiliger, um 306 in Nisibis (heute: Nusaybin) als Sohn christlicher Eltern, † 9.6. 373 (nach der Chronik von Edessa) in Edessa (heute: Urfa). - E. lehrte als Mönch und Diakon in Nisibis. Als Jovinian 363 Nisibis den Persern überließ, verließ er die Stadt. Nach vorübergehendem Aufenthalt in Amid nahm E. seinen bleibenden Wohnsitz in Edessa, wo er vielleicht die »Schule der Perser« begründete. E. wohnte als Einsiedler in einer Höhle nahe bei der Stadt, studierte und schriftstellerte unter Beten und Fasten und trat öfter als Bußprediger und Ketzerbestreiter auf. E. ist ein hervorragender Theologe und Schriftsteller der alten syrischen Kirche, ihr größter Redner und Hymnendichter. Er schrieb zahlreiche Kommentare zu biblischen Büchern und dogmatisch-polemische Werke. Vieles wurde ins Griechische übersetzt, aber auch ins Armenische, Arabische und Äthiopische. E. wird als Heiliger verehrt und wurde 1920 zum Doctor ecclesiae erklärt. Sein Fest war früher der 1. Februar; seit 1920 ist es der 9. Juni, bei den Syrern und Griechen der 28. Januar.
