FRAZER, Sir James George, schottischer Altphilologe, Anthropologe und Religionshistoriker und -ethnologe, OM, FRS, FBA, « 1.1. 1854 in Glasgow, † 7.5. 1941 in Cambridge. - F., Sohn des Drogisten Daniel F. Frazer und dessen Gattin Kathleen Brown, erhielt seine Schulausbildung an der Springfield Academy und Larchfield Academy in Helensburgh. 1874 erwirbt F. den M.A.-Grad an der Universität seiner Heimatstadt, bevor er als Stipendiat seine altphilologischen Studien am Trinity College, Cambridge, fortsetzt. soziale Anthropologie in Liverpool. - F. ist neben (s.d.) Arthur Bernard Cook, Francis Macdonald Cornford, Jane Ellen Harrison, Gilbert Murray und William Robertson Smith als frühem Vertreter prominenter Forscher im informellen Kreis der »Cambridge Ritualists«. Disziplinhistorisches Merkmal dieser angelsächsischen religionsgeschichtlichen Forschungsrichtung, die wesentliche Anregungen vom schottischen Schriftsteller und Philologen Andrew Lang (s.d.) erhielt, ist ihre Abkehr vom Subjektivismus als religionsprägendem Faktor; von Georg Friedrich Creuzers (s.d.) Mythenforschung her gilt ihr Augenmerk unter Einbeziehung anthropologischer und ethnologischer Studien dem Kultus und Ritual als Ausdruck des Volksglaubens. Der wissenschaftliche Durchbruch gelang F. mit seiner monographischen Behandlung des Totemismus, den F. nach umfangreichen anthropologischen Studien als elementare Frühform primitiver Religiosität der Clans ansah. Auf die Fragestellung war F. im Anschluß an die Lektüre von (ab 1912: Sir) Edward Burnett Tylors (2.10. 1832-2.1. 1917) 1871 unter dem Eindruck Charles Robert Darwins (s.d.) erschienener Monographie »Primitive Religion: Researches into the Development of Mythology, Philosophy, Religion, Language, Art, and Custom« von seinem Studienfreund William Roberston Smith gebracht worden; 1884 kommt es erneut zur Begegnung zwischen F. und Smith, der mittlerweile auch am Trinity College lehrte. Smith macht F. zunächst auf anthropologische Fragestellungen aufmerksam und ermuntert 1888 F. zur Bearbeitung der Lemmata »Taboo« und »Totemism« für die neunte Auflage der »Encyclopaedia Britannica«, so daß F. (mit Einschränkungen) der englischen anthropologischen Schule zuzurechnen ist. Deren Ergebnisse rezipierte wiederum Sigmund Freud (s.d.) in seiner Abhandlung »Totem und Tabu. Einige Übereinstimmungen im Seelenleben der Wilden und der Neurotiker«, die 1912 erschien - im gleich Jahr also wie »Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse« von Émile Durkheim (s.d.) sowie die drei Schlüsselwerke der (s.u.) »Cambridge Ritualists« (»From Religion to Philosophy. A Study in the Origins of Western Speculation« von Francis Macdonald Cornford, »Four Stages of Greek Religion« von Gilbert Murray sowie Jane Ellen Harrisons »Themis. A Study of the Social Origins of Greek Religion«). - 1907 erhielt F. seine erste Professur in Liverpool. 1921 wechselt F. nach Cambridge, wo er den neu errichteten Lehrstuhl für Sozialanthropologie übernahm. Neben Tylor und Durkheim gehört F. zu den akademischen begründern der Religionsthnologie, ohne jedoch jemals praktische Feldstudien betrieben zu haben. - F.s Sicht ist zunächst gekennzeichnet vom evolutionistischen Ansatz Darwins. Im Lauf der Jahre hat F. seine These korrigiert und dabei Wesen und Bedeutung der Totems näher bestimmt sowie die ursprüngliche Annahme einer direkten Relation zwischen Totemismus und Exogamie dahingehend revidiert, daß Exogamie kein Ausdruck des Totemismus (dessen Vorkommen F. nun auch ethnologisch und ethnographisch differenziert) darstelle, sondern eine häufige Parallelerscheinung sei. In den mehrfach überarbeiteten und erweiterten Auflagen von »The Golden Bough« untersuchte F. die mysteriöse Kultpraxis und religionsgeschichtlich-folkloristische Herkunft des Kultes der Diana Nemorensis am Nemi-See bei Aricia (heute: La Riccia) am Fuß der Albaner Berge und dessen temporäres, durch Mord und Übergabe eines geweihten Zweiges an den Nachfolger beendetes Priesterkönigtum (rex Nemorensis); es war nicht zuletzt der Rezensionsartikel »`The Golden Bough' and the Rex Nemorensis« (1902) von Arthur Bernard Cook, der F. zur Teilrevision und Überarbeitung seiner Ansichten in den erstmals 1905 erschienenen »Lectures on the Early History of the Kingship« (s.u.) veranlaßte. Dessen ungeachtet übte F.s »The Golden Bough« zeitweise großen Einfluß auf das literarische Werk von T[homas] S[tearns] Eliot (26.9. 1888-4.1. 1965), James Joyce, D[avid] H[erbert] Lawrence (11.9. 1885-2.3. 1930) und William Butler Yeats (13.6. 1865-28. 1. 1939) aus. F.s Motivikarsenal zählt zu Yeats' Inspirationsquellen, und den Topos zerstörerischer Wasserkraft entlehnt Lawrence (der übrigens auch Jane Ellen Harrisons »Themis. A Study of the Social Origins of Greek Religion« [1912] rezipierte) in seiner 1926 vollendeten, aber erst 1930 publizierten Erzählung »The Virgin and the Gypsy« F.s rekonstruierender Beschreibung von Frühjahrsritualen (vgl. zum Ganzen John B. Vickery, The Literary Impact [s.u.]). Spuren archaischen Aberglaubens verfolgte F. auch im Alten Testament. - F. hegte eine Antipathie gegen Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff, die auf deren unterschiedlicher Wertschätzung des Pausanias (143-176) als seriöser Quelle beruhte: F. hatte mit »Pausanias's Description of Greece« 1898 eine kommentierte sechsbändige Textedition publiziert, die in der Forschung mit der textphilologisch zuverlässigeren Akademieausgabe (s.u.) von Hermann Hitzig und Hugo Johann Friedrich Daniel Wilhelm Ferdinand Blümner (9.8. 1844-1.1. 1919) konkurriert. - In Frankreich wirkte F.s Ansatz prägend auf die Forschungen von Pierre Roussel (1881-1945). Gegenwärtige Religionsethnologie und vergleichende Religionsgeschichte rezipieren nachwievor F.s Forschungen, korrigieren aber F.s und Jane Ellen Harrisons Annahme, daß frühgriechische Religiosität wesentlich primitive Glaubensinhalte und magische Kultpraktiken aufweise, zugunsten des epistemologischen Ansatzes, der die Andersartigkeit der griechischen Religion ohne wertendes Interesse zum historischen Forschungsgegenstand erhebt. - Als Sekretär der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften verfaßte Hermann Diels (s.d.) im Januar 1911 den Wahlvorschlag zur Aufnahme F.s.; am 27.4. erfolgte dann F.s Ernennung zum korrespondierenden Mitglied. - F. starb beinahe völlig erblindet und vergessen am 7.5. 1941. Nur wenige Stunden nach ihm verstarb seine Gattin Lady Elisabeth Johanna geb. Adelsdorfer, Witwe von Charles Baylee Groves, die er 1896 geheiratet hatte; die Ehe blieb kinderlos. F. gehörte der Free Church of Scotland an. F. war Member of the Order of Merit (OM).
