JUSTIN II., Kaiser von Byzanz (14.11. 565-5.10. 578). - Seine
Eltern waren Dulcidius und Vigilantia, die Schwester Kaiser Justinians
I. Zuerst war J. Kuropalates. nach dem Tod Justinians I. und mit der
Hilfe seiner Ehefrau Sophia wurde er Kaiser. Zur Zeit seiner Herrschaft
erobern die Longobarden Italien. Er kämpfte gegen die Avaren und Perser.
Ab dem Jahr 571 verfolgte er die Monophysiten, J. setzte das Weihnachtsfest
auf den 25. Dezember fest und entwickelte eine reiche Kirchenbautätigkeit,
vor allem in Konstantinopel. Das Nizänische Glaubensbekenntnis wurde
unter J. in der Liturgie durch das Nizäno-Konstantinopolitanische
ersetzt; weiters verfügte J. die Absingung des Cherubim-Hymnus beim
»Großen Eingang«. Ab 573 litt er unter Wahnsinn. Nicht zuletzt aus
diesem Grund wurde am 7.12. 574 Tiberios zu seinem Mitkaiser erhoben.
Dieser war ab 578 sein Nachfolger.
