KOPERNIKUS, Nikolaus (eigtl. N. Koppernigk, C.=Cop(p)ernicus u. ähnl., M.K.= Mikolaj K. u. ähnl.), Astronom, * 19.2. 1473 in Thorn, † 24.5. 1543 in Frauenburg (Ostpr.). - N.K. studierte in Krakau, Bologna, Rom, Padua u. Ferrara (humanist. Studien, Mathem., Astron., Medizin u. Jura einschl. kanon. Recht). 1506 wurde er Leibarzt seines Onkels L. Watzelrode, des Bischofs von Ermland, in Heilsberg. Ab 1512 war er Domherr in Frauenburg. Er entwickelte zunächst ein Schema, das zur Basis einer Währungsreform wurde. Die Beschäftigung mit der Astronomie gehörte nicht zu seinen beruflichen Aufgaben, sondern war privater Natur. Seine Revolutionierung der Astronomie beruhte nicht auf neuen Beobachtungen, sondern hatte ihre Ursache in einer völlig unbefriedigenden mathematischen Form der ptolemäischen Astronomie. Dort hatte man, um die »Phänomene zu retten«, komplizierte Bewegungsabläufe beschreiben müssen, für die man keine physikalischen Gründe angeben konnte. Auch für den Monddurchmesser ergaben sich monatliche Abweichungen von fast 100 Prozent. K.s Lehrer in Bologna, D.M. von Novara, ein Platoniker, hatte wahrscheinlich den Anstoß gegeben, ein neues astronomisches System zu schaffen, das eine einfache mathematische Gestalt hat. Schon im Altertum war bei Aristarch von Samos die Idee des heliozentrischen Systems bekannt, die aber hauptsächlich durch die Autorität des Ptolemäus verdrängt wurde. - K. stützte sich bei seinen Arbeiten hauptsächlich auf die 1496 gedruckte »Epitome in Almagestum« von Peurbach und Regiomontanus und auf Gerhard von Cremonas lateinische Übersetzung des Almagest, die 1515 gedruckt wurde. K. hatte seine Theorie 1532 im Manuskript fertig, wagte aber zunächst nicht, sie zu veröffentlichen, obwohl ihr Inhalt der gelehrten Welt zunehmend bekannt wurde. Schließlich gab er zögernd den Commentariolus heraus, eine kurze Zusammenfassung seiner Astronomie. 1540 veröffentlichte der Wittenberger Georg Joachim (Rheticus), der zuvor eigens nach Frauenberg gereist war, um das Manuskript des K. zu studieren, seine »Narratio Prima de Libris Revolutionum«. Schließlich erschien das volle Werk des K. 1543 unter dem Titel »De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium« mit einer Widmung an Papst Paul III. Das vermittelnde Vorwort Andreas Osianders stellte die ganzen Erkenntnisse des K. nur als ein Denkmodell dar, um dem Werk die Anstößigkeit zu nehmen. Trotzdem kam es 1616 auf den Index librum prohibitorum. (Zur der Frage des Realitätsanspruchs des K. und Osianders Vorwort siehe F. Krafft, Physikal. Realität oder mathemat. Hypothese?) K. hatte seine heliozentr. Theorie nur mathematisch, nicht aber physikalisch zu begründen vermocht. Das konnte erst die Weiterentwicklung durch Galilei und Newton (Gravitationsgesetz) leisten. Eigentlich kann man erst seither von einer gesicherten Theorie ausgehen. Doch K. hat durch sein Werk der Wissenschaft einen entscheidenden Impuls gegeben. Der Kampf vorwiegend der kathol. Kirche gegen seine Theorie hat aber einen Gegensatz zwischen Kirche und Naturwissenschaft entstehen lassen, der im Grunde bis heute weiterbesteht, wenn sich auch die Gegenstände der Auseinandersetzung geändert haben. Die heliozentrische Theorie wird heute von christlicher Seite nicht mehr ernsthaft bestritten. Schon gar nicht wird eine ptolemäische Weltsicht in Betracht gezogen. Jedoch gibt es völlige Gegenentwürfe, die zwar physikalisch nicht ernstzunehmen sind, aber zeigen, daß auch heute noch die k.anische Theorie als Herausforderung empfunden werden kann.
