MACDONALD, George, Schriftsteller, * 10.12. 1824 in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Schottland, † 18.9. 1905 in Ashtead, Surrey. Stammte aus bescheidenen Verhältnissen. Ab 1840 studierte er am King's College in Aberdeen Griechisch, Chemie und Physik. Mußte sein Studium unterbrechen, um das nötige Geld zu verdienen. 1845 erhielt er einen Preis in Chemie und den Grad eines Magisters Artium in Chemie und Physik. Er wollte nach Deutschland, um bei Justus von Liebig sein Chemiestudium fortzusetzen; Geldmangel hinderte ihn daran. In London arbeitete er als Tutor. 1846 veröffentlichte er in »Scottish Congregational Magazine« sein erstes Gedicht. 1848 studierte er am Highbury Theological College in London und verlobte sich mit Louisa Powell. 1849 vertrat er für drei Sommermonate in Cork in Irland einen Prediger. 1850 berief ihn die kongregationalistische Gemeinde in Arundel, Sussex, als Pastor. Im folgenden Jahr heiratete er Louisa Powell und veröffentlichte als Privatdruck seine Übersetzung von zwölf Geistlichen Liedern des Novalis. Da G.M. seine Überzeugung äußerte, auch ungetaufte Heiden hätten eine Chance, zur ewigen Seligkeit zu gelangen, und im Himmel sei auch Platz für Tiere, verwehrten ihm die Diakone seiner Gemeinde wegen Häresie das Predigen. Er verzichtete auf sein Amt und beschloß, fortan die Literatur zu seiner Kanzel zu machen. Da er aber von seinen literarischen Arbeiten allein nicht sich und seine rasch auf elf Kinder anwachsende Familie ernähren konnte, übernahm er verschiedene Tätigkeiten: 1853 gab er in einem College in Manchester Unterricht in Chemie und Mathematik; 1859 lehrte er am Bedford College in London englische Literatur; 1866 hielt er Kurse im King's College London; Vortragsreisen in Schottland, England, Irland und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika brachten ihm zusätzliche Einkünfte, die er bitter nötig hatte. Denn seine große Familie litt unter der Geißel der Tuberkulose. Seine Brüder, vier seiner Kinder und ein Enkelkind sah M. von ihr dahingerafft. Er selbst hatte schon mit 25 Jahren Lungenbluten und lag immer wieder einmal schwer krank danieder. Aus Gesundheitsgründen verbrachte er den Winter 1856-57 in Algier. Ab 1877 ließ er sich des günstigeren Klimas wegen mit seiner Familie in Italien nieder, zuerst in Nervi bei Genua, dann in Porto Fino, schließlich 1880 endgültig in Bordighera an der ligurischen Küste. Dort pflegte er das Winterhalbjahr zu verbringen. Im Sommer aber ging er mit seiner Familie, die er zu einer Laienspielschar ausgebildet hatte, in England auf Tournee. Zum Repertoire seiner Wanderbühne gehörten die dramatisierte »Pilgerreise« von Bunyan, Shakespeares »Macbeth« und Corneilles »Polyeucte«. Trotz seiner Krankheiten und Schicksalsschläge wurde M. 80 Jahre alt, schrieb 60 Bücher und hielt viele Vorträge. Er gewann die Freundschaft bedeutender Autoren, z. B. Lewis Carroll, John Ruskin und Mark Twain. In der Bourgeoisie des prüden viktorianischen Zeitalters war G.M. ein subversiver Autor, geprägt von deutschen Romantikern wie Novalis, E.T.A. Hoffmann und Jean Paul, von der liberalen Theologie und von dem christlichen Sozialismus des F. D. Maurice. Er hatte etwas von einem Propheten und etwas von einem Mystiker an sich. Das überstrenge Bild, das ihm der schottische Calvinismus in Elternhaus, Schule und Kirche von Gott übermittelt hatte, leuchtete dem Erwachsenen nicht mehr ein. Gott, so glaubte er, könne unmöglich ein Tyrann sein, der ständig auf der Lauer liegt, einem jedes Vergnügen mißgönnt und die meisten Menschen auf ewig verdammt. Typisch für diese düstere Religiosität, von der G.M. sich befreite, war seine Großmutter, die selbst Geigenspiel für sündhaft hielt und deshalb die Violine eines ihrer Söhne verbrannte. G.M. fand, Gott könne nicht mißbilligen, daß die Menschen sich an Schönem in Natur und Kunst erfreuen, ist er doch ein Vater, der seine Kinder unendlich liebt, mehr noch als M.s eigener Vater, den der Dichter überaus liebte und dessen gütiges Wesen ihm half, das Zerrbild von einem rächenden Gott zu überwinden. M. verschloß seine Augen nicht vor den Übeln der Welt, hatte er doch Erdbeben, Flutkatastrophen, Schiffsuntergänge, Krankheit und Tod erlebt. Er glaubte aber, daß alle Übel, die Gottvater seinen Kindern schickt, letztlich ihnen zum Guten dienen. So wurde G.M. in seinen Dichtungen der Seher vom Sinn des Todes und der poetische Künder einer Theodizee, ohne aufzuhören, gegen die von Menschen verursachte soziale Ungerechtigkeit und das Elend der Slums zu protestieren. Die heutige Literaturkritik schätzt von M.s Werken die Märchen, Kinderbücher und phantastischen Erzählungen am höchsten. Diese Fantasy-Werke beeinflußten H. G. Wells, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, G. K. Chesterton, Elizabeth Yates und Madeleine l'Engle. M.s realistische Romane dagegen erreichen nicht den künstlerischen Rang seiner Fantasy, doch enthalten sie viel Humor, köstliche Dialoge und großartige Schilderungen der Landschaft und des Lebens in den Dörfern, Seehäfen und Großstädten. G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis und Hans Urs von Balthasar haben nachdrücklich auf G.M., einen Meister der Spiritualität, aufmerksam gemacht.
