REID, Thomas, Philosoph, kathol. Theologe, * 26.4. 1710 in Strachan bei Aberdeen, † 7.10. 1796 in Glasgow. - R. verbrachte seine Jugend in Strachan, mit 12 Jahren wurde er in das Marischal College in Aberdeen aufgenommen. Dort hatten besonders seine Lehrer Thomas Blackwell und George Turnbull, der in seinen Schriften die Bedeutung des Commonsense im Rekurs auf Berkeley betonte, Einfluß auf R. Dieser bestand 1726 die Abschlußprüfung und schloß das Studium der Theologie an. 1732 versah er den Dienst am dortigen Presbyterium, von 1733 an war er als Bibliothekar am Marischal College tätig. 1736 führte ihn eine Reise durch England nach London, Cambridge und Oxford. Von 1737 bis 1751 wirkte R. als Vikar in New Machar, 1740 heiratete er seine Kusine Elisabeth. Am Kings College von Aberdeen war R. von 1751 bis 1764 Lehrer und Mitglied des Universtätsrates. 1758 gründete er zusammen mit John Gregory die »Aberdeen Philosophical Society«, die bis zum Jahr 1773 Bestand hatte. Die Diskussionen diese Kreises hatten besonders die Schriften von David Hume zum Gegenstand. 1763 legte R. das Manuskript des »Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense« Hume zur Kritik vor, welches im folgenden Jahr veröffentlicht wurde. 1764 folgte R. dem Ruf auf den Lehrstuhl für Moralphilosophie am Old College in Glasgow als Nachfolger von Adam Smith. Die Jahre 1774 und 1775 brachten Auseinandersetzungen mit Joseph Priestley über R.s Prinzipien des Commonsense. 1780 gab R. die Vorlesungen am College auf und bereitete die Schrift »Account of the University of Glasgow« vor, die drei Jahre nach seinem Tod veröffentlicht wurde. - R. begründete mit seinem Werk, in dem er eine Alternative zur idealistischen Theorie von Descartes, Locke, Berkeley und Hume konzipierte, die Schule der Commonsense-Philosophie.
