ROWLEY, Harold Henry, * 24.3. 1890 in Leicester, + 4.10. 1969 in Cheltenham, Alttestamentler. - R. besuchte das Wyygeston College in Leicester, dann ab 1910 das Baptist College in Bristol und das Mansfield College in Oxford. Von 1917 bis 1922 war er Pfarrer einer vereinigten, baptistisch-congregationalistischen Gemeinde in Wells, Sommerset. Danach ging er 1922 bis 1930 als Missionar der Baptist Missionary Society nach China; in dieser Zeit war er von 1924 bis 1929 Assistant Professor of Old Testament Literature an der Shantung Christian University. Nach England zurückgekehrt, war er 1930 bis 1934 Assistant Lecturer in Semitic Languages am University College in Cardiff, von 1935 bis 1945 Professor of Semitic Languages am University College of North Wales in Bangor. 1945 wechselte an die Universität Manchester. Dort war er bis 1949 Professor of Semitic Languages and Literatures und von 1949 bis 1959 Professor of Hebrew Language and Literature. Nach seiner Emeritierung zog er nach Stroud/Glos., nicht weit von Manchester, wo er seine intensive Publikationstätigkeit noch fortführen konnte. Nach schwerer Krankheit verstarb er am 4.10. 1969 im Krankenhaus von Cheltenham - Von R.s Wirksamkeit sticht besonders seine immens breite Publikationstätigkeit in praktisch allen Teilen des Alten Testaments hervor. Er beschäftigte sich dabei einerseits mit traditionellen Fragestellungen und zog Bilanzen aus der Forschungsgeschichte und ihren Ergebnissen, andererseits wandte er sich neueren Fragestellungen und insbesondere den ab 1947 entdeckten Qumran-Schriften zu. Dieser neue Bereich verband sich zugleich mit seinem Interesse am Danielbuch und der zwischentestamentlichen Literatur. Neben dem Alten Testament als seinem Hauptbereich publizierte er auch Studien zum Neuen Testament und zu Fragen der vergleichenden Religionsgeschichte. Hier wirkte sein Aufenthalt in China und seine Kenntnis der chinesichen Kultur und Religion nach - Besonders wichtig wurde R. in der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. In großer Offenheit und mit großem Interesse an den menschlichen Schicksalen bemühte er sich als Auslandssekretär der Society of Old Testament Study (1946-1956), die abgerissenen Fäden wieder aufzunehmen und nicht zuletzt zu den deutschen Kollegen neue Brücken zu schlagen. In fachlicher Hinsicht tat er dies durch Vermittlung der während des Krieges auf beiden Seiten erschienen Literatur (vgl. »European Scholars and Publications ... during the War Years« und »Britische Literatur zum Alten Testament in den Kriegsjahren 1939-1945«). Er war auch mit den Anfängen der 1950 gegründeten International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament eng verbunden. Als Herausgeber von Bibellexika wurde er auch zum Vermittler der wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse an einen breiteren Kreis.
