TUTANCHAMON (Tutanchaton), Neb-Kheperu-Re (hethit.: Bibhururia), ägypt. König der XVIII. Dyn., um 1350 v. Chr. - Über die Herkunft des T., dessen Grabesanlage 1923 von den Engländern Howard Carter, Archäologe, und Earl George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Carnavon entdeckt worden war, wird viel spekuliert. - T. trat die Nachfolge des sog. Reformkönigs Amenophis IV. (Achnaton) an, der vermutl. sein Vater ist; die Mutter war eine babylon. Nebenfrau desselben. Legitimiert aber wurde die Thronfolge durch die Hochzeit mit einer Tochter Achnatons, Anchesenpaaton (später: Anchesenamon). - T. ist zu dieser Zeit etwa neun J. alt; seine Frau etwas älter. - Kurze Zeit regiert er mit seinem Schwager Smenkhare, der bereits zum (alten) Amon-Kult zurückgekehrt war. - Nach Smenkhares Tod glaubt die Aton-Partei, den Sieg errungen zu haben, doch bereits im vierten Jahre seiner Regierung verlässt T. Tell`El Amarna, die von Achnaton gegründete Hauptstadt, und kehrt in die alte Residenz Theben zurück. - Verbunden damit ist die Änderung seines Namens Tutanchaton in Tutanchamon. - Durch genaue inhaltl. Analysen der ägypt. Religion, wie sie durch die hieroglyph. Grabesinschrr., vor allem auch in der sehr gut erhaltenen Anlage T.s, bezeugt wird, erkennt man, daß es sich bei diesem Problem nicht um einen Religionswechsel handelt. Es geht vielmehr um eine theolog. Entscheidung bezüglich der Anbetungsform des einen Gottes Re, der Sonne: seine sichtbare Form, die Sonnen-Scheibe Aton, oder seine unsichtbare, die Sonnen-Energie, Amon. - In T. Grab herrscht der direkte Bezug auf Amon vor; Aton ist jedoch nicht kategorisch verbannt. - Die an diese Entscheidung gebundenen machtpolitischen Intrigen und Verflechtungen verlaufen auf einem anderen Plan, der andernorts zu diskutieren wäre. - T.'s Herrschaft endet abrupt: im Alter von ca. neunzehn J. (biometrische Unterss. der Mumie weisen ihm ein Alter von ca. siebenundzwanzig J. zu) stirbt er. - Seine körperl. Verfassung, wie sie, ebenfalls durch Unterss der Mumie, rekonstruiert werden kann, verweist auf eine tuberkuloseartige Erkrankung, doch läßt eine Kopfverletzung die Vermutung zu, daß T. einem Attentat zum Opfer fiel. - Im Grabe T.'s fand man zwei mummifizierte, vermutl. weibl., Frügeburten; evtl. hatte das junge Königspaar noch eine Sohn, der jedoch im frühen Kindesalter gestorben war. Bei seinem Tod galt T. als kinderlos, was zu erneuten Problemen in der Thronfolge führte. - Durch Vermählung mit Anchesenamon legitimierte sich der, bereits unter Achnaton fungierende, Aton-Priester Eye hierfür. Dieser war denn auch der letzte Herrscher der XVIII. Dyn.. - Über das weitere Schicksal Anchesenamons ist so gut wie nichts bekannt - auf den Darstellungen, die Eye als König zeigen, ist dieser immer von seiner `alten' Frau begleitet. - Der Fund des Grabes T.'s gehört zu den bedeutendsten archäolog. Entdeckungen. Allerdings findet man trotz der Materialfülle, deren Auswertung Wesentliches zum Verständnis der ägypt. Kultur, Gesch. und Rel. beiträgt, wenig Hinweise auf Persönlichkeit und polit. Leistungen T.'s. - Sehr viel mehr als H. Carter kurz nach der Entdeckung des Grabes sagte, kann man auch heute nicht sagen: T. lebte, starb und wurde begraben. - Abschließend sei noch auf die Bedeutung seines Namens hingewisen, der unter dem ersten Herrscher der XIX. Dyn., Haremheb, Opfer rigoroser Verfolgung wurde - Inschrr. wurden z. T. vernichtet, z. T durch den Namen Haremhebs ersetzt, Darstellungen z. T. zerstört. Die ägypt. Version seines Vornamens Neb-Kheperu-Re bedeutet: »Re ist der Meister der Gestalten (im Sinne v. Metamorphosen)«, dem die hethit. Form Bibhururia in etwa entspricht: »Re ist der Herrscher des Werdens.« Tutanchaton läßt sich mit »lebendiges Abbild des Aton«, T. entsprechend mit »lebendiges Abbild des Amon« wiedergeben. - Die Versuche, seinen Namen und somit seine Existenz auch im geistlichen Bereich - der jenseitigen Welt und der Herrscherfolge - auszulöschen, könnten ein Indiz dafür sein, daß es sich bei T. nicht nur um ein schwaches Kind, Luxuspersönchen in den Händen intrigierender Priester, handelte, sd. er politische Initiativen entwickelt hatte (er ließ vermutl. einige noch heute nachweisbare Gebäude erstellen.) Dies würde die Annahme, daß er mit etwa siebenundzwanzig J. starb, plausibler erscheinen lassen.
