VERMIGLI, Pietro Martire, ref. Theologe, * 8. November 1500 in Florenz, † 12. November 1562 in Zürich. - Vermigli stammte aus Florenz. Bereits 1516 wurde er Canonius ordinarius bei den Augustinern in Fiesole. Er studierte an der Universität Padua und wurde dort auch Professor der Philosophie. In gleicher Funktion wirkte er auch in Ravenna und Bologna. 1541 wurde er Abt des Kloster in Spoleto und noch im gleichen Jahr Prior des Klosters San Petri in Neapel, sowie Prior des Klosters San Frediani in Lucca. In dieser Zeit war Vermigli vermutlich der Vertreter eines Reformkatholizismus und trat sehr stark für die Verbreitung dieses Evangelismus in Italien ein. Er kam aber früh im Verdacht der Verbreitung reformatorischen Gedenkengutes. Mit der Wiedereinführung der Inquisition in Italien 1542 floh er aus dem Kloster und ging zuerst nach Zürich. Noch im gleichen Jahr wurde er als Professor der Ethik und der Theologie nach Straßburg berufen, wo er bis 1547 wirkte und vor allem in einen theologischen Gedankenaustausch mit Martin Bucer kam. Mit der Einführung des Interims in Straßburg wurde seine Position nicht mehr haltbar und er nahm, genauso wie Bucer einen Ruf König Heinrich VIII. von England an. Von 1547 bis 1553 wirkte er als Professor für Altes Testament in Oxford. Nach Heinrichs Tod und der Rekatholisierung durch dessen Tochter Maria kehrte er England 1553 den Rücken und kehrte nach Straßburg zurück. Dort wurde er mit einer Ethik- und Theologieprofessur beauftragt. Mit seiner dezidiert reformierten Theologie geriet er jedoch bald in Konflikt mit dem Kollegen Johannes Marbach, der die Straßburger Kirche immer stärker in die lutherische Richtung führte. 1556 verließ Vermigli Straßburg und übernahm eine Theologieprofessur in Zürich, wo er bis zu seinem Tode wirkte. Als Vertreter Zürichs an der Seite der Hugenotten nahm Vermigli auch am 9. September 1561 am Colloquium in Poissy teil. - V. war bereits in Italien wegen seiner umfangreichen humanistischen Bildung berühmt. In seiner italienischen Zeit war er ein Anhänger des italienischen Evangelismus. Erst nach der Einführung der Inquisition und seiner Flucht hat er sich zur Reformation offen bekannt und wurde ein reformierter Theologie, dessen Arbeiten, vor allem auf dem Gebiet des Alten Testaments im 16. Jahrhundert sehr geschätzt wurden.

Vermigli wurde im Jahr 1499 und nicht 1500 geboren. Peter Martyr Vermigli kam unter Edward VI. nach Oxford. Heinrich VIII. war schon im Jahr 1547 gestorben! Nach dem Tod Edwards wurde Maria Königin von England und fühte die Gegenreformation wieder ein.
