Work of art and perception
libri nigri, volume 83
Works of art are real; this is the only reason why perception is essential to their experience.
Günter Figal
The “privileged view” within phenomenology suggests a close relationship with art. The work starts from this statement and deals with the phenomenological approaches of Husserl, Ingardens, Heidegger, Max Benses and Merleau-Pontys in their respective relationship to art and aesthetics. Accordingly, the main concern of the book is to discuss the pros and cons of the phenomenological view of art based on its reference to modern art, and in doing so to show the functions and performance limits of the phenomenological methods and to reveal their respective systematic premises. The central question behind this is whether a positive approach to modern art is possible through the phenomenological approach, with the problem of perception as a focus.
